What to know before writing a good essay

Learning to write an essay is an important skill for the development of the communicative function. In the following article we give you some recommendations that can be useful to work in your classes. Read them and encourage your students to “rehearse”.

As a form of expression, an essay is a “tentative”, or if you want to put it that way, an “experiment” that is carried out with concepts and reasons to approach a topic from a certain point of view.

The most important thing is to try, test, blur and try again.

In an essay, a personal perspective about a particular problem is usually expressed. It is an exercise in thought and argumentation.

An essay is written because you want to address a problem for which there is no immediate solution and which, therefore, arouses or may provoke a controversy. Writing essays is not a simple job as it requires thoroughness and sensitivity to an issue and at this point you may need an essay help.

In an essay, you usually express a personal perspective or point of view about a problem. Not as a simple private opinion, but with the intention of persuading others of what one thinks and says. Therefore, it is important to have good ideas and good reasons and to achieve a good way to expose them through a text.

In the following points we offer some suggestions that can help your students in the development of an essay. We go by part:

Clear things beforehand

To write an essay it is important to have some clear things beforehand. However, it is recommended not to wait until everything is clear to start writing. Reasons? Usually the writing itself turns out to be remarkably enlightening and, therefore, it is not advisable to defer it too much. In fact, it is good that these “first steps” that we are going to talk about now are materialized through notes, preparatory notes and compilation of material that is considered to be useful later. The approach to a problem always takes the form of a question: Identifying the question and determining the type of question is essential to know if the problem is well posed and what kind of response is expected.

First thing to look

The first thing is to look at the type of question. For this, pronouns and interrogative turns help. So, when someone asks what is such a thing? is asking for a set of identifying signs of that thing, which can be incorporated orderly in a definition, a description, a story of the generation of the thing, etc. When asked, how is such a thing done?

The second one

The second is to recognize the subject. Here we are making a distinction between subject and problem, something that often is not transparent to the student. We can explain then, that the subject is what the question is about, its subject. The problem, on the other hand, is the conflict of opinion that arises about that issue. Thus, for example, a subject can be the freedom of the human being, and a problem related to it, the question about whether the human being can be considered free in the definition of his behavior, or whether this is determined by factors other than his own will.
